This meant Italian tanks had to keep moving forward or stand fast under 2-pdr broadsides for several minutes without replying to enemy fire, until British tanks got within range. Clearly by doing so they waived accuracy and a degree of hitting power, but they thought they would compensate for that with a murderous rate of fire which would overwhelm the opponent, avoid damage to themselves by not allowing the Italians to get close, cause damage in any case given the known brittleness of Italian tanks, and possibly scare them off.Ĭonversely, Italian 47/32 gun crews were instructed to engage enemy armor at about 400 meters, thus maximizing hitting power and favoring accuracy over brute force barrage. With few exceptions the British (all gun types) were used to engage Italian armor at the farthest possible distance, 1000 meters and way over that, shooting as quickly as possible. It was studied, but the Italians decided to not produce it. The Italians also purchased a sample of the Vickers Mk.E tank. The main result of this cooperation was production of CV 29 tankettes, which later evolved into the most common type of Italian armoured vehicle of its time: the CV 33 tankette or Carro Armato L 3. The late 1920s and early 1930s were spent in cooperation with British companies, most successfully with Vickers-Armstrongs. Italian tank building rested on their laurels in the 1920s after the design of the FIAT 3000 light tank. The Carro Armato Tipo 2 never evolved into Italy's first medium tank. ![]() The significant decrease in military spending after the end of WWI hit tank building hard. ![]() Italy, like many tank building nations in the interbellum period, had poor luck with medium tanks. The Carro Armato M 13-40 was comparable to British cruiser tanks that it shared the front line with. In 1940-41 Italian tanks were on par with British tanks, or sometimes even surpassed them. It's true that Italy fell behind in the arms race, but this happened closer to 1942 or even 1943. Stereotypically, Italian tank forces were filled with antiquated designs that broke down constantly. ![]()
